Mystery Parade: Mystery Solved

I went out with my camera on Sunday Morning and ran right into this parade. Later I looked on the web to see what it was about, but I couldn't find it. A Portugal Parade is scheduled for June 6, but this was May 31. I didn't see any signs about any saints days being celebrated. Another East Cambridge Mystery!

This is Where I Live

This sign is an East Cambridge landmark, though nowadays the chickens are slaughtered out of town and brought in dead. My building is next door.

Here's the view from my patio of my neighbors who live above the dead chicken place. I always wonder if it smells of chicken.

Here's the back of my building. Our rubber roof was due for replacement; and the new roof will be superior in every way. The inset shows the yellow flags warning folks to keep off the roof.

Old Blue Eyes at a local grill. A strange sign warns of wild skaters. Pugs has a loyal clientele.

Finally there's Albert's Grocery next to the mysterious Globe Department Store.

TV Executives Take Note

Remember 1900 House and Frontier House and all the other reality shows in which people learned how crappy it is to live in the past? When is some network going to make Future House, in which volunteers learn what it would be like to have robots do all the housework and commute to the job in a hovercraft? As Criswell said, "We are all interested in the future, for that is where we will spend the rest of our lives."*

I'd Like to Live Here

Yesterday I took my camera to Franklin St., which is parallel to Mass Ave. on the way to Central Square. That area is a jungle of shade trees and climbing ivy. I want to live there.

Many of the houses have interesting features.

This house has a wonderful fence. You get tantalizing glimpes of the house and yard.

Same fence. They give us people on the outside plenty to look at.
A closeup. Can you see that the stone relief depicts scenes from the Bible?

A small window gives another peek inside.

I like color--loud color, even. I would definitely feel comfortable in this neighborhood.

A Web Mystery

Ten minutes after my last post, I began getting hits from all over the world: 3 from the U.S., 2 from Saudi Arabia, 2 from the United Kingdom, 2 from Brazil, 2 from South Africa, 1 from Thailand, 1 from Germany, 1 from Switzerland, 1 from Portugal, and 1 from Mexico. The hits dropped off in about 3 minutes. What happened?
The Statcounter records list a "referring URL," but the flurry of hits had these long URLS that, if clicked, led to an error message. The referring URLs all started with "www.blogger.com/navbar....." Could it be that my blog was the designated "next blog" when people clicked the link of the same name?

A Fabulous Reward..

...to the person who can identify this fungus (?) that appeared in my patio. It looks like a Swiss-cheese mushroom.
UPDATE: Chuck has identified the mystery mushrooms as morels (though we won't eat them just in case they are some super-poisonous look-alike), so he will receive a fabulous reward!

Friday the 13th Squared

Today is the 2nd Friday the 13th of 2009. What does that mean? Are we in for a double whammy of bad luck? That could be, however, once we get to the bottom of the Wheel of Fortune, things can only get better. I think Lady Luck will be delivering some goodies soon.

The Invaders (in Color), cont.

OK, last night I watched the episode "Summit Meeting" in which a couple of the aliens had tiny flashing walkie-talkie-like devices. So they weren't entirely dependent on Bell.

I know it isn't very sharp. Here's the HOLLIS record. You can read my thesis on my wiki, if you've a taste for Leviticus and Jungian psychology.

Revisitng a Classic

Do you remember The Invaders (in color) from 1967-8? Architect David Vincent witnesses a flying saucer landing and, learning that its occupants plan to rule the world, spends 2 seasons trying to convince other Earthlings that the invasion has begun. I have been watching episodes from the 2nd season, wherein a few people have been convinced, but there is still so much more to be done.

It's great to watch shows you haven't seen for 40 years and realize how many inconsistencies you missed the first time. For instance, how does architect David Vincent support himself while he drives around the country checking out flying saucer reports? He always has nice suits and new cars. Does he do quickie designs between his investigations? Perhaps this is why the narrator always say "Architect David Vincent"; to imply that he does something else between episodes.

The aliens's talents and powers are strangely limited. They travel between galaxies, they can take human form (for 3 days, after which they need regeneration, they have little palm-held devices that kill humans by cerebral hemorrhage, but when they need to get in touch with one another, they have to use the telephone. One poor alien is overheard calling for help from his (its?) superiors on a pay phone.

They also make bad choices: they aim to make the Earth their own, but they can't breath oxygen. What to do? They'll try to alter their own chemistry, and if that doesn't work, they'll suck all the oxygen out of the atmosphere. Wouldn't it be easier to find a planet with a suitable atmosphere? I mean, these people hop from galaxy to galaxy. You can't tell me that there aren't planets better suited. They remind me of some human organizations that insist on doing things in the most wasteful way possible.
